Think of hybrid technology and you're mind, like mine, probably thinks of cars, specifically boring cars like the Toyota Prius, but a French company think hybrid technology could be used to great effect in motorcycles, and they've designed the concept you see above with that in mind.

But hybrid technology isn't the only unusual thing this concept has inside its frame, the company also designed the bike to use a rotary engine.

Furion, the company behind the design, say the pairing of a 645cc rotary engine and 40kW electric motor will work together to pump out 180bhp and a massive 151ftlb of torque. To put that into perspective, KTM's 1290 Super Duke R, which is an absolute torque monster, produces 99ftlb.

Sounds great, so why isn't everyone doing it? Well, hybrid systems take up a lot of room, which is why Furion opted to used a compact and unusual rotary engine. The company think they could squeeze the conventional engine and the electric motor in the space where conventional engines go, and five lithium batteries would fit in the seat unit, which looks small. The company also claim a dry weight of 190kg, which isn't bad, and is much lighter than many electric bikes.

Whether or not the technology exists right now to create a hybrid motorcycle, it's certainly an interesting idea for the future of motorcycling. Would you ride a hybrid bike?
